AdobeStock_508905455As a termite exterminator Expert Pest Solutions knows how important it is to not only treat an infestation when/if it arises – but also prevent one from ever forming again. If you suspect a termite infestation, don’t wait! You may find it hard to believe, but according to the U.S. Forest Service, termites are the most prominent wood-damaging insects in the United States! Call the termite exterminator today!

Here in Missouri, we are prone to termites. Experts estimate that there are 8-12 termite colonies per acre. A termite exterminator has their job cut out for them! Did you know that there are more than 2500 species of termites worldwide? Scientists even estimate that if you added up the weight of all of the termites in the world, it would exceed the weight of all the people! While some are beneficial, others are definitely not. There are two major subgroups – drywood and damp wood, both live inside various types of wood. Another class, subterranean termites, live in soil and in wood that is in contact with soil. There are four main species of termites in Missouri, all of which are of the subterranean type. If you see these pests anywhere in your home – it’s time to call the termite exterminator!

As their names would indicate, damp wood and drywood termites seek out moist or dry woods respectively. An active infestation can be identified by: a presence of tunnels in wood, live termites, and a mixture of soil and feces within the tunnels. Termites like to live in large, established colonies with several different roles, similar to ants and bees. The species of termites and some prevention routes are as follows:

  • Subterranean Termites (Family Rhinotermitidae): Subterranean termites live in underground colonies or in moist secluded areas above ground that can contain up to 2 million members. They build unique “mud tubes” to gain access to food sources and to protect themselves from open air. Subterranean termites are by far the most destructive species. Some prevention tips include avoiding water accumulation near your homes foundation, diverting water away with properly functioning downspouts, gutters, and splash blocks, reduce the humidity in crawl spaces with proper ventilation, never bury wood scraps or waste lumber in the yard, and most importantly, eliminate wood contact with the soil. You should try to maintain a 3 inch clearance on the foundation of your building.
  • Formosan Termites (C. formosanus): Originally from China, Formosan termites are the most voracious, aggressive, and devious of over 2,000 termite species known to science. Formosan termites are a subterranean species of termite. The prevention for this type of termite is the same as the subterranean group of termites.
  • Drywood Termites (Family Kalotermitidae): These social insects infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil. Some prevention methods for drywood termites include making sure firewood and scrap wood is stored at least 20 feet from the home. Drywood termites form new colonies by gaining access to wood through small holes, so sealing all cracks and crevices in a structure is important.
