Pest Control Ants – Identify – Eliminate

Let’s talk about the pest control ants – There are more than 14,000 species of ants worldwide, but here in this area we need to know what the most common types are in order to eliminate them. Not all methods work the same on all ants. There are several things to look at for pest control ants when trying to determine what type of ants are in your home. Look at appearance, habitat and consider the region in which you live – learn the characteristics of size, color and shape. Some ants bite and others sting – and some, such as fire ants, do both.

Expert Pest Control ants Springfield Missouri common types antsAnts can be found in your home, in your yard and just about anywhere else! Most common ants don’t pose any major health threats but that doesn’t mean we want them around. They are still a nuisance and can contaminate food and surfaces and require professional treatment to eliminate pest control ants.

One of the most common types of ants in our area is the house ant – a tiny, dark colored ant usually referred to as a ‘sugar ant.’ When you crush them, they emit an odor that is strong and smells like rotten coconuts. They get into everything and are found everywhere in the home. We see these most often in the early Spring, but once they show up, they are not inclined to leave on their own.

Another problematic little critter is the pavement ant – very small, these brown-colored ants are seen in cracks and crevices in sidewalks and concrete blocks. They build huge underground nests with volcano-shaped mounds as entrances. They usually stay outdoors but will go inside buildings with concrete slabs.

When it comes to pest control ants, the carpenter ant is the most destructive and comes in all shapes and sizes. These ants have a queen that grows wings and can get up to an inch in size, while the smaller, worker ants, are about half that size. They build nests inside wet and rotted wood, and bore trails and chambers to travel and colonize in. They can get really huge – into the thousands of ants – and they can cause a lot of damage to your home or other structure.
