The time for fall pest control is here. While we may welcome the seasonal changes that bring cooler temperatures and less humidity, it also means that bugs and rodents and some other types of pests are more abundant. They have had all spring and summer to grow, and now will be gathering in preparation for finding a winter home. Now is the time for you to take steps for fall pest control outside your home in order to keep pests from inside.

Mice and rats are common rodents that will seek shelter for the winter in a warm space and once established, fall pest control can be difficult. Some types of rodents are deer mice, rats and common house mice. You will see droppings and gnawing marks if they are present. The kitchen, pantry, attic and inside walls are favorite nesting places for these pests. Open food containers is another place where you will see signs of rodents. It’s important for many reasons to eliminate them – they carry disease and can cause illness. They will chew through wiring and shred insulation. Look for access points – small holes, gaps in doors and windows, anyplace they can squeeze in from outside. Inspect the outside of your home for holes and cracks that they can crawl through.

Fall pest control for fruit flies and house flies can be achieved by checking entryways to your home – especially the south and west-facing doors and windows on a warm day – they are attracted to the heat. This can also be the case for other flying insects – wasps, yellow jackets and bees. These stinging insects can build nests under the eaves, in the attic, in garages and sheds.

Other bugs we typically see a lot of in the fall are ants, roaches, bugs and beetles. They build colonies into walls and beneath slab foundations and under driveways and sidewalks. Although not as common as some other types of pests you’ll see in the fall, stinkbugs are a real nuisance in the late summer and early fall, and once they have made it into the walls they are incredibly difficult to get rid of. Fall pest control for these particular pests is a real challenge so it’s best if you eliminate areas of entry for them before the cold weather gets here and they take up residence permanently. We recently wrote about roach control – eliminate their favorite nesting areas – moist, damp spots in your home.

For fall pest control check the outside of your house for gaps in the foundation, holes and crack and other places pests can gain entry. Weeds and other plants should be removed, as well as any other lawn debris that attracts pests. Firewood storage should be at least 20 feet away, and if possible, elevate it off the ground. Even fall decorations such as straw bales can be a perfect vehicle for attracting pests and give them the perfect access to your home. Check boxes and containers that have been in storage for pests, too. Take it all outside and clean it out for fall pest control of bugs and insects that have been hiding in them.
